Toronto based "Catrinas Makeup & Design" founder and artist, Maria José Miranda, will be creating a full Catrina look for a live audience. Join in and observe the intricate work and techniques used to bring her design to life.
Since 2013 Maria José has had the select privilege of executing Day of the Dead makeup for a number of performers for cultural and corporate events around the city. Come and see first hand how it's done and get inspired!
She will also be covering some background on the "Catrina" character, and why it has become such an important icon for the Dia de los Muertos celebration.

María José Miranda, Makeup Artist
Based in Toronto, Catrinas Makeup & Design founder and artist, Maria Jose Miranda has had the select privilege of designing and executing Day of the Dead makeup for a number of performers and models since 2013 at cultural and corporate events.
María José attributes the beginning of her passion project to the Day of the Dead celebrations at the Harbourfront Centre in 2013, while directing Toronto based dance group Ballet Folklorico Puro Mexico. Here, she had the opportunity to create, play and fully execute Day of the Dead makeup for over 20 performers and fully managed the troupe's site animation.
Miranda’s designs have evolved over the years and have become more elaborate as she continues to explore different textures and techniques, establishing a unique style of her own. Owner of an elaborate collection of authentic Mexican garments from different states of Mexico, her characters come to life. She carefully handles each piece of the process from character design, wardrobe , styling and head piece design.
